Singapore Sights - CNY & South and North Bridge Road

This series of pictures is from 2 or 3 weeks back. It documents my way from Chinatown to Kampong Glam through South and North Bridge Roads around the time of CNY (Chinese New Year).

My favorite hotel at Speaker's Corner.

A glance towards Chinatown and the Pinnacle@Duxton.

The bridge over Singapore river, also where South Bridge Road gives way to North Bridge Road.

St Andrews Cathedral

Raffles City, a shopping mall and an office building

This is the entrance of the office building. This is also the address of the Hungarian Embassy in Singapore.

CNY decoration of one of the shops

This was also the original site of the Raffles Institution, the first, and one of the or perhaps even the best school(s) in Singapore.

Raffles Hotel. 5 stars.

This the front of Chimes on Victoria Street, its back looks on North Bridge Road. (The Raffles City building in the background). It is a historic building complex, which was originally a Catholic convent, the Convent of the Holy Infant Jesus (CHIJ), hence its name. It is currently being refurbished into a dining, shopping and entertainment center.

Arrival to Kampong Glam and Masjid Sultan

This is an HDB neighborhood right at/before the end of North Bridge Road.

This is the end of the road. Beyond/between the trees it is a river :)

This is upriver on Rochor River. The river is the continuation of Rochor Canal, that starts somewhere at the Bukit Timah area (where Singapore has its highest point).

This is downriver. The total length of the river is 0.8km!

This is the meeting point with Kallang River (from the top in the first, and left in the second picture) and continuing underneath the bridge, emptying into the Kallang Basin. (Folyók találkozása!)

With the Singapore Sports Hub in the background (apparently its construction is supposed to be finishing just now: it is scheduled to open in April 2014!).

Meanwhile a detour to Little India (with German flag!)

Although I have heard about it before, I just happened on this building. This is the famous Mustafa Centre. The "shopping mall", the only one, that is open 24/7. Instead of being a shopping mall, however, it is a huge supermarket on about 4 or 5 floors that are very narrow and very long.

I haven't taken pictures inside other than this one, because it is so funny: the local Red Bull :)

I cannot say how many entrances it has, this is somewhere in the middle. They have a multitude of cashiers all over the place, both ends and the middle on both sides. Rather than organizing the cashiers at one place and controlling the flow of goods (buying vs stealing) that way, what they do is they "lock" the plastic bags with your purchases inside, with a plastic ring and place guards at the doors who check your belongings on exit.

This is the main entrance on Serangoon Road.

Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple. It is dedicated to the Hindu goddess Kali. It was built in 1881 by Bengali laborers, but not in the style of Northeastern Indian Kali temples in Bengal, but the style of South Indian Tamil temples from Tamil Nadu.

They were kind enough to give me permission to take a few pictures inside as well!

No idea what this is :)

Another temple on my way

And this is Lavender Road (that leads to the end of North Bridge Road). I'll have to figure out the significance of the rainbow of colors that pop up frequently in Singapore.
