Singapore Sights - Kallang

I have wanted to explore the other side of Rochor river, the area north of the Kallang river. You might remember, that I have shown you the Rochor river from one side already (here), when I have walked the length of the North and South Bridge Roads. Now I have gone to the other side.

This is one of my favorite residential buildings in the area. I wonder if this is HDB as well. Probably not :)

This picture also shows a bridge over the Rochor river.

I haven't actually found the ukulele movement, but this sign made sure that I can indeed cross over to the other side.

The Rochor river, the bridge over it, and a water pumping station...I guess it is placed here as a result of construction activities going on on the other side of the bridge.

The other side of Rochor river with the Kallang Riverside Park.

Looking back on the North Bridge Road side.

That junction is the end of North Bridge Road. And Rochor river flows towards Kallang river (to the left in the picture), this is why the area is called Kallang.

A map of the area. I have started out from the bridge at the top left branch of the two rivers (Rochor) and walked over the fat green area towards the bridge at the top right branch of the two rivers (Kallang). The area is Kallang. The green area is the Kallang Riverside Park.

This sculpture is the Spirit of Kallang. Officially unveiled by Minister for Information and the Arts and the Minister for Trade and Industry when the Kallang Gasworks was retired on 23 March 1998. According to its plaque, it incorporates materials from Kallang Gasworks. Its design symbolizes the hardworking ethos and enduring spirit of the early pioneers of Singapore who worked hard to establish a better life for future generations. The Kallang Gasworks was in operation between 1861 and 1998.

Another design feature that I seem to like very much.

Kallang river ahead.

The pedestrian bridge over Rochor river.

Closed to pedestrians.

:) Well, I haven't seen any signs of work, so perhaps not so much in the 1st quarter of 2014.

Another memento of the Kallang Gasworks.

And finally, Kallang river. With dragon boaters and kayakers and the Stadium under construction in the background.

The other side of the bridge is Geylang. And right next to the bridge, that arch is Kallang MRT station with arriving and departing trains.

There is huge construction works going on, because they are building the Stadium. Actually I took this picture because I liked the color of the earth here. And this picture is as true as I remember!!!

Construction site. But the interesting thing is, that this area is where the first airport of Singapore was located. (One of the roads nearby is called the Old Airport Road.) And despite the awful pictures (sun in my eyes and that of the camera) you can probably glimpse some of the structures of the entrance of the old airport.

Geylang Road. The border of the area that is the subject of my next post.

Before entering the true Geylang area, I have explored a little to the north. And found some construction workers taking a nap in the shade behind (north of) Kallang MRT station.

Looking back on Kallang river.

Kallang river with an interesting contraption...

...that has turned out to be a litter trap.

Construction site. The signs say "Singapore Piling" (they are driving piles/poles into the ground before the above ground construction begins) and "Be safe at work / Be home safely".

This is still a sign at the construction site, but is a general cautionary sign to prevent dengue-fever, i.e. against disease-carrying mosquitoes.

Still life with indicators that both an HDB and a Buddhist temple are ahead.

The HDB.

With more still life elements :)

And the temple. (I am starting to realize, that red and white striped sun shades are not a sign of summer and beaches but a Buddhist temple! It seems to be a necessary if not sufficient element.)

Just so that you know, it is dangerous to enter the canal, especially if it rains!

Old Kallang Basin, the picture was on an information pole - as if this was an area visited regularly by lots and lots of tourist...

Community garden. (The red ananases are either a remainder of CNY or permanent luck an cheer charms.)

Communal BBQ area.

I was trying to take a picture of the bird cages, but the contrast was just tooooo much.

You won't  believe what this is. In preparation for a visit to another area (sometime in the future), I have seen pictures of these things. These are poles, on/up which bird-loving Chinese people draw their bird cages and let the birds sing! I am not joking!!! This is a bird-singing area.

On my way towards Geylang, I found this area, which looks to be residential, non-HDB area (of course with HDB in the background).

Somebody's famous restaurant.

With the car of a moving Chinese orchestra. (Street musicians!)

The corner of Geylang Road. More in my next post.
